Working towards a diagnosis

In this module we explore the process of screening patients for ADHD both prior to referral and during the  diagnostic process.

We review the screening tools used once you have accepted the patient referral. We look at how the tools best align with the diagnostic criteria and when to choose the right tool and how to use it.

We look at the introduction of diagnostic subtypes in ADHD and why they are useful in practice.

Finally you get the chance to see how a diagnostic score is categorised into a diagnostic subtype.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, healthcare practitioners will be able to:

  1. List at least two reasons why the ASRS screener is a good tool in practice.
  2. Identify the common problem of using the SNAP-IV tool in pre-screening children for ADHD.
  3. Summarise how you might help a patient answer questions in the diagnostic interview whilst maintaining a patient led approach.
  4. Identify the diagnostic criteria that must be met to form a diagnosis of ADHD in an adult with inattentive type presentation.
  5. Identify the diagnostic criteria that must be met to form a diagnosis of ADHD in a child with combined type presentation.
